What is Pay@ Gateway?
Pay@ Gateway is South Africa’s payment gateway for online and in-store merchants, built on Pay@’s 19 years of payment infrastructure heritage since 2007. Accept card payments, EFT, QR codes, Capitec Pay, PayShap, and in-store cash payments — all through a single integration.
Who can sign up?
Any registered South African business — sole proprietors, close corporations, private companies, trusts, and NPOs. You need a valid SA bank account, CIPC registration, and standard FICA documents. We do not support international businesses or unregistered traders.
How long does it take to go live?
Most merchants go live within the same day. Signup takes 10 minutes, you get immediate sandbox access to start building or testing, and once your FICA documents are verified (usually same-day for complete submissions), your live account activates and you can accept real payments.
What documents do I need?
Certified ID copy of the business owner or signatory, proof of business address (utility bill or bank statement under 3 months old), proof of banking (bank confirmation letter or recent statement), and CIPC registration documents. All uploaded during the online signup flow — no email or post needed.
What are your fees?
2.85% per transaction with a minimum fee of R1.85. One flat rate covers all payment methods — cards, EFT, QR, Capitec Pay, PayShap. No setup fees, no monthly fees. All fees exclude 15% VAT. Volume discounts kick in from R250,000 monthly volume.
Are there setup or monthly fees?
No. Zero setup fees, zero monthly fees, zero minimum transaction requirements, no contracts. You only pay the per-transaction fee when you actually process a payment. Cancel at any time without penalty.
How does settlement work?
Same-day settlement is included on all plans. Transactions captured before our daily cut-off settle to your nominated SA bank account on the same business day. Real-time settlement reports are available in your merchant dashboard, and you can export reconciliation files in CSV.
How do refunds work?
Full and partial refunds are processed from your merchant dashboard or via API. Card refunds go back to the customer’s original card automatically. EFT and bank-transfer refunds are processed as outbound bank transfers. Refunds typically reach the customer within 1-3 business days.
What payment methods do you support?
Visa and Mastercard, Scan to Pay, Zapper, SnapScan, Pay with EFT (Capitec, FNB, Nedbank, Standard Bank, Absa), Capitec Pay app-to-app, PayShap, Pay in Store at 5,000+ retail locations, and Payflex Buy-Now-Pay-Later. All through a single API integration.
Do you support 3D Secure?
Yes. All card transactions use 3D Secure 2.0, which is mandatory in South Africa and provides liability shift against fraudulent chargebacks. The authentication is handled automatically — frictionless for low-risk transactions, step-up only when needed.
What is Pay in Store?
Pay in Store is exclusive to Pay@ Gateway. Customers pay for online purchases with cash at 5,000+ retail locations — Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, Spar, PEP and more. They get a barcode at online checkout and pay at any participating store. This opens your business to South Africa’s large unbanked market that no other SA payment gateway can reach.
Which platforms do you support?
Native plugins for WooCommerce and Shopify. Also Wix, BigCommerce, and any custom platform via our REST API. Full developer documentation and a sandbox environment are delivered immediately on signup.
Is Pay@ Gateway PCI DSS compliant?
Yes. PCI DSS Level 1 certified — the highest tier, the same standard applied to the largest global card processors. All card data is tokenised and never touches your servers, dramatically reducing your own compliance footprint.
Are you regulated?
Yes. Pay@ Services (Pty) Ltd is an FSP under the FSCA (FSP No. 29423) and a TPPP under SARB and PASA oversight. Fully compliant with FICA, POPIA, and the National Payment System Act. We’ve held these regulatory positions since 2007.
How do you handle fraud?
Layered fraud prevention: 3D Secure 2.0 authentication on all cards, velocity checks, BIN blocking, IP geolocation, device fingerprinting, and real-time machine-learning monitoring. Custom fraud rules per merchant available on Growth and higher plans.
Do you provide a test environment?
Yes. Immediate sandbox access on signup — before your live account is approved. Test all payment methods, webhook delivery, and API calls with test credentials. Sandbox transactions never settle real money. Move to live by flipping one toggle.
